Africa and Handball – When One Victory Is Enough

In the current Women’s World Championship 2021, four African teams participated:

1. Angola
2. Cameroon
3. Tunisia
4. Rep. Congo (Congo)

This order is not random. Angola won gold in the latest African Cup, Cameroon silver, Tunisia bronze, and Congo won nothing.

One Victory

However, in this Women’s World Championship, Congo will be the best performing African team.

Among the 32 countries worldwide participating, Congo will be ranked 23.

The only reason for Congo becoming the best performing African team is, that they won against Tunisia 33-24 in group F (the same group as Denmark).

Since only one team is eliminated per group during the preliminary round, Congo qualified for the main round at the expense of Tunisia. Congo then went on to lose every single match and hence they lost the main round and left with 0 points.

Congo won one match, and that was enough to outperform every African country participating.

Angola Keeps Winning

The remaining African countries each lost their group, hence none went to the Main Round as Congo did, consequently, they all went on playing the Presidents Cup (aka the losers’ club).

In this cup, Angola won every single match, and they will leave the tournament ranked 25 with multiple victories to their name.

The morale: to be the best is not necessarily about the number of victories, but to be victorious when it matters. Then one victory is enough.
